Our Programmes
A comprehensive approach to fighting sickle cell disease—from early diagnosis through treatment, family education, and healthcare system strengthening.
Clinics & Diagnosis
Early diagnosis, using Point of Care testing, was the critical first step in identifying and enrolling The Shikuri Project’s initial cohort of children living with sickle cell disease. Today, our focus is on providing continuous life-saving care through quarterly clinics, treatment monitoring, caregiver education, laboratory follow-up, and community health worker support. We are also overjoyed that effective May 2026 Homa Bay County has been conducting newborn screening across the county—an important public health innovation that embeds early sickle cell diagnosis within the county health system itself and represents a major step toward sustainable, county-led care for vulnerable children.
- Initial cohort identified through point-of-care diagnosis
- Newborn screening programs
- Referral pathways to specialized care
Life-Saving Treatment
We ensure children have access to hydroxyurea and other essential medications that dramatically reduce painful crises, hospitalizations, and mortality. Proper treatment transforms sickle cell from a fatal condition to a manageable one.
- Hydroxyurea therapy programs
- Pain crisis management
- Blood transfusion coordination
- Medication adherence support
Family Support & Education
Parents and caregivers are the frontline of care. We provide comprehensive education on recognizing warning signs, managing daily care, and responding to crises—empowering families to protect their children.
- Caregiver training workshops
- Crisis recognition education
- Nutrition and hydration guidance
- Peer support networks
Health Systems Strengthening
Sustainable impact requires strong systems. We partner with Homa Bay County to integrate sickle cell care into the broader healthcare infrastructure, train healthcare workers, and develop lasting policies
- Healthcare worker training
- Clinical protocol development
- Supply chain strengthening
- Policy advocacy and development
